Tomas Bridges fue el principal artifice de lo que Carlos Darwin califico como una de las grandes maravillas, al referirse a la transformacion de los indios de los canales fueguinos, al tener informacion de que, dejando su vida nomade, vivian en forma civilizada. Un grupo de misioneros evangelicos, encabezados por Bridge, habia logrado la formacion de un pueblo de mas de 300 habitantes. Habia sido un niño de la calle, pero logro por si mismo una amplia cultura, que le permitio producir un notable diccionario, a la par de sus labores de pastor y lider de la comunidad, que fue el comienzo de Usuhaia.Thomas Bridges was the main architect of what Charles Darwin called "one of the greatest miracles". He was referring to how the nomadic inhabitants of Fuegian channels turned into a civilized people. Bridges together with a group of Christian missionaries managed to build a town with more than 300 inhabitants. Although he had been born in the streets, he came to be a man of great culture and was able to compile a remarkable dictionary. He also worked as a pastor and was the leader of the community that would later become the city of Ushuaia.
